In general us guys start lifting weights to make our bodies look better, after all everyone knows a better body equals a better you, and a better you equals a better life.
However unless you are mindful of what you are doing in the design of your workouts this doesn't necessarily happen.
There a few key areas to consider when weighing up whether your current workouts for gaining muscle are going to move you towards the ideal male body or away from it.
1) What do you really want?
Are you following the routines of the bodybuilding professionals and wondering why you still don't have that beach body you're after? The truth is that these routines aren't designed to work for you, and even if they would, if they worked you might not like it.

I know that as guys we are usually hung up on the bigger is better idea, but this is one case where it really doesn't apply. Outside of your local bodybuilding contest most people much prefer the proportioned lean look of an underwear model or Hollywood star.
2) Proportion is what creates the look of the ideal male body
If you gain 20lbs but it all goes on your rear, stomach and hips, will you look any better?? Nope. See it's about adding size and shape in the right way, in the right places, while keeping some areas, like your gut, small. Doing this will give you the look that stands out in a crowd in the right way, but it means you have to choose your exercises with the ideal body in mind.

3) Body weight is irrelevant when it comes to looking good
Yes you will probably be able to lift more if you weigh more, but is it worth it? The scale really doesn't tell you anything worth knowing, what you see in the mirror is what matters.

There isn't much point in working out aiming to reach a particular body weight if you won't like how you look when you actually get there.
4) Weight lifted is not the be all and end all
Unless you actually are a power lifter. In which case, good luck. However if you're not, it's more about how you can use the weight to help you shape your body. More Body Design than weight training. Using the right form is just as important as the load on the bar.

5) Exercise selection and performance are vital
It's not just about how much you can cheat, or shove up into the air, but rather how you can focus tension on the muscle you are trying to develop. Try it. You might not be able to lift as much weight as you usually do, but then that's not what workouts for gaining muscle are all about, is it?
